About the Museum

(Late Taisho period) With the support of Matsumoto Art, an exhibition was held that brought together over 60 works by local artists, and plans were made to build the Matsumoto City Museum of Art.
1993 November The Committee for Developing a Basic Concept for the Art Museum was established to formulate a basic concept for the art museum, and in November 1994, it accepted a proposal for "An ideal art museum for the city of Matsumoto."
1996 November The proposed site for the art museum was decided to be outside the former site of Chuo 4-chome
November The Art Museum Forum was established and the Forum Report was accepted in January 1997.
1997 November Formulated the "Basic Plan for the Matsumoto City Museum of Art (tentative name)"
November Establishment of the "(tentative name) Matsumoto City Museum of Art Material Collection Selection Committee"
Striving to collect art materials
November Museum Construction Review Committee established
Receive guidance on the functions of the museum
1998 November "(Tentative name) Matsumoto City Museum of Art Master Plan" formulated
November Design was entrusted to Tadanaga Miyamoto Architectural Design Office through a proposal system.

2009 November Junichi Takeuchi appointed director of Matsumoto City Museum of Art
2010 November Received the Excellence Award at the 12th Public Architecture Awards from the Public Architecture Association
November Approved as an important cultural property facility open to the public (until October 2015)
2013 November Junichi Takeuchi retires as director of Matsumoto City Museum of Art
November Minoru Ogawa appointed director of Matsumoto City Museum of Art
2021 November Closed. Large-scale renovation work to restore functionality.
