To Know the Mandate of Heaven

August 2025, 8 (Tuesday) – November 5, 11 (Monday holiday) Tuesday, August 5th, 2025 – Monday, public holiday, November 3rd, 2025
Kamijo Shinzan Memorial Gallery

"To know the Mandate of Heaven" is a phrase from the Chinese philosopher Confucius, referring to the realization of one’s life purpose at the age of fifty. A fitting example is Kamijo Shinzan, who began presenting his now-iconic large-scale calligraphy works only after turning fifty. Around the age of sixty, he also began to explore large-scale pieces in clerical and seal script.

This exhibition focuses on works Kamijo created during his fifties and sixties, such as the representative piece “谷神不死” (Koku shin fu shi) from his fifties, and “堅勁” (Ken kei) from his sixties. These works mark a period when he moved beyond the style of his teacher and began pursuing his own expressive path. Experience the spirit and soul embedded in each brushstroke as he continued to seek new forms of artistic expression.
