Since the word "Mingei" was created by Yanagi Muneyoshi and others a century ago. During the modernization of Japan, this idea developed into a movement to highlight local handicrafts and spread nationwide. Shortly after the war, in Matsumoto, Miyosawa Motoju, Maruyama Taro and others founded the Nagano Prefecture branch of the Japan Folk Crafts Association (now the Nagano Folk Crafts Association), and Matsumoto is still known as a city known for Mingei (folk crafts).
The fourth exhibition of the Matsumoto City Museum of Art introduces works by artists who were deeply involved in the folk art movement in Matsumoto, Shinshu.
