Ishii Hakutei (XNUMX-XNUMX) was an artist actively working from the late Meiji era to the Showa period. Born in Tokyo, he inherited the artistic lineage of his grandfather, Suzuki Gako, and his father, Ishii Teiko. From a young age, he learned Japanese painting from his father and at XNUMX years old, he began studying under the Western-style painter Asai Chu and took his first real steps towards becoming a professional painter. His artistic talents were quickly recognized by the Pacific Art Society and the Bunten Exhibition, leading him to become a central figure in the mainstream art world. Hakutei contributed to the development of modern Japanese art by helping to launch the Literature Magazine Hosun and by contributing to the establishment of both the Nika Association and the Issui-kai.

In March XNUMX, Hakutei and his family evacuated from Tokyo to Matsumoto. He remained in Matsumoto after the war, in addition to his creative work, he devoted himself to instructing young artists and establishing art groups, contributing greatly to the revival and development of postwar art in Nagano.

This exhibition presents the following: In Room XNUMX, we focus on works by artists who had close ties with Hakutei during his time in Matsumoto. Room XNUMX features works by Hakutei alongside pieces by his grandfather, Suzuki Gako, and other members of his artistic family.

The artistic legacy Hakutei established in this region continues to be passed down to this day. We hope you will enjoy this collection of works, which can be seen as the origin of this artistic legacy.
