Right: Hishida Shunso's "Rafukisen" (part), Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum collection | Left: Saigo Kogetsu's "Moonlit Flying Heron" (part), Matsumoto City Museum of Art collection
There are also works by Harukusa and Kakutei in Kogetsu. A profusion of Shinshu Japanese paintings.
This exhibition is a joint project between the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum and the Matsumoto City Museum of Art, and features approximately 80 carefully selected pieces from the Japanese painting collections of both museums. It traces the evolution of Japanese painting in Nagano Prefecture and the Matsumoto region, while showcasing the diversity and possibilities of contemporary expression.
Among the artists with ties to Shinshu from the Edo period to the present day, some were not only born in Shinshu but chose the area of their own volition, while others became involved through evacuation during wartime, and others were inspired to come to the area by the museum. The concept of "Japanese painting" was born during the Meiji period, when values were changing dramatically with the influx of Western culture, and while it has continued to inherit traditional techniques, it has gradually deepened over time. And what has driven this is the artists' insatiable spirit of inquiry.
The sensibility and spirit of the "Japanese painting adventurers" nurtured by Shinshu and the people who live here have been passed down to the present day and are on the verge of further development. Please take a look at the footsteps and achievements of these adventurers.
