In 1909, a young Englishman came to Japan, a country he had long admired. His name was Bernard Leach (1887-1979). Through etching, he developed close ties with Yanagi Muneyoshi and other members of the magazine Shirakaba, and was passionate about introducing British art to the world. He also studied under Ogata Kenzan VI and began his career as a ceramic artist. He was also devoted to the folk art movement started by Yanagi, and returned to his home country to build a kiln with Hamada Shoji, aiming to revive traditional British pottery. In an era when ceramic production was still considered the work of a craftsman, there were many difficulties for a ceramic artist to become independent in Britain. However, Leach had the conviction and ideals to overcome these difficulties. Leach was born in Hong Kong and spent his childhood in Japan. The idea of "marriage between East and West," which was nurtured through his experience of both Eastern and Western cultures, was Leach's ideal worldview. During his subsequent visits to Japan, he visited folk kilns all over the country, produced works together with them, and sketched the scenery, experiences that greatly influenced Leach's artistic activities. After the war, he also stayed in Matsumoto for an extended period, working with Yanagi Muneyoshi, giving lectures to local people, and at Matsumoto Mingei Furniture, he also provided furniture design guidance based on his knowledge of traditional British furniture. This retrospective exhibition will be the first to present Leach's wide-ranging works, including etchings, paintings, and ceramics, and related materials, which left a mark of beauty all over Japan, in Matsumoto, the place where he was associated with the artist.
