Sculptor Munehide Hosokawa Exhibition The beauty of human existence
October2017-December10
Saturday, October 7, 2017 – Sunday, November 26, 2017
Special Exhibition Gallery
A "battle" against a disappearing fate
I would like to reconsider the responsibility of artists to create human heritage, between what is built and what is destroyed. A return to Japanese things and something certain, even if it is small. (Munehide Hosokawa)
We will be holding a special exhibition of works by Hosokawa Munehide (1930-94), who continued to ask himself, "What is sculpture?" and pursued the existence of human beings.
HosokawaMunehideBorn in Matsumoto City, and raised in Suwa City. While studying sculpture at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, he exhibited at the Shinseisaku Association Exhibition, and his talent was noticed early on. His "Decorated Tomb" series was born from the image of returning to Japanese culture, his "Man and Woman" and "King and Queen" series reveal the inner world of human beings, and his "Kamakura and Muromachi" series are among his most well-known works.PortraitHe has produced works such as "Dogen," inspired by sculpture, and a series of sculptures based on narrative paintings from the picture scrolls "Hell Story" and "Gaki Story," which date from the end of the Heian period to the early Kamakura period. Through the figures of fading people and objects, he has explored forms that exist beyond time and history, forms that are carved away inward.
This exhibition traces the evolution of Hosokawa's creative process through around 90 pieces (sculptures, drawings, etc.) from his early period to his later years. The human obsession to leave evidence of life behind, a prayer for eternity... The raw beauty that Hosokawa put into his sculptures is also a "battle" against the fate of all living things disappearing.

Workshop Report (High School Student Course)
We held a workshop for high school students in the hope that the fading images of people and objects would help them to understand the work of sculptor Hosokawa Munehide, who explores forms that exist beyond time and history and that are carved away inward.
The lecturer was Toshiyuki Shibakawa, an artist who continues to create works on the theme of "Modern society excavated 2000 years from now." What would something familiar to us look like if it were excavated in the 2000st century, 41 years from now? Using canvas as the soil of 2000 years from now and a roller as a shovel of the future, Matsumoto city was excavated.
