Hosokawa Munehide (1930-1994) was born in Matsumoto City and moved to Suwa during his childhood, graduating from Suwa Seiryo High School and studying sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts. His talent was highly regarded from the start, as he was first selected for the 19th Shinseisaku Exhibition while still a student in the university's specialized department, won the New Artist Award at the 20th exhibition the following year, and was recommended as a member of the Shinseisaku Association after only four exhibitions. Hosokawa is one of the leading postwar Japanese sculptors.
In the museum, seven works by Hosokawa Munehide are on special display in the space in front of the Art Information Library on the third floor. Among them, "Dogen" (3) is one of the works in which the artist sought the subject matter of past Japanese culture, and won the Third Nakahara Teijiro Award for Excellence. "Portrait of Queen No. 7" (1972) is a masterpiece from the "King and Queen" series, which was created after researching the Mayan civilization of Mexico.
