Postwar Japanese Housing Legends: Provocative and Introspective Houses —A house that provokes, a house that reflects

October2015-December4 Saturday, April 18, 2015 – Sunday, June 7, 2015
Special Exhibition Gallery

When we think of postwar architecture, we must consider it in relation to the city, but broadly speaking, it can be divided into the functions of "living," "working," and "playing." This exhibition focuses on the aspect of "living," and introduces private homes designed by 1953 architects, ranging from Kenzo Tange's "Dwelling" (1976) to Toyo Ito's "House in Nakano Honmachi" (1976) and Tadao Ando's "Nagaya in Sumiyoshi" (16). How have architects approached and found answers to residential spaces, which are private places for people, while also considering artistic qualities? This exhibition explores the trends in residential art from the postwar period to the 70s, along with their concepts.

Today, homes come in many different forms, and we hope that these exhibitions will provide an opportunity to look at these living spaces, deepen our contemplation, and offer new perspectives.
