Ikegami Hyakuchiku-tei Collection
The Ikegami Hyakuchikutei Collection is a collection of 1890 items, mainly modern literary materials, collected by Matsumoto City writer Kisaku Ikegami (pen name Hyakuchikutei, 1978-221). This exhibition continues from the previous one and introduces works by Ogawa Senboku.
Ogawa Senboku (1882-1971) was active from the end of the Meiji period to the Showa period as a Buddhist painter, Western-style painter, Japanese-style painter and manga artist. Born in Kyoto, he initially became an apprentice to a Buddhist painter, but from 1902 he studied Western-style painting under Asai Chu while also working on Japanese-style painting. In 1910 he moved to Tokyo, where he gained popularity by publishing illustrations and manga in magazines such as Hototogisu and Taiyo. He then became a fully-fledged Japanese-style painter, and in his later years he devoted himself to Nanga (literati painting).
Chimika loved to travel, and traveled to many places, including Fukushima, where he created works inspired by the nature and customs of the area. He also visited Matsumoto many times, and developed a deep friendship with Kisaku Ikegami. The collection includes many of Chimika's works, including works commissioned by Kisaku.
Please enjoy Chimika's free-spirited, humorous works that are unconstrained by convention.
