Claude Monet, Water Lilies, Kagoshima City Museum of Art

A lineup of masters from Japan and abroad, including Kuroda Seiki, Fujishima Takeji, Monet, Cezanne, Picasso, and Dali

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the cultural and tourism exchange agreement between Kagoshima City and Matsumoto City. To commemorate this, with the full cooperation of the Kagoshima City Museum of Art, we will be holding an exhibition showcasing all of these masterpieces.

Kagoshima City developed during the Edo period as a castle town for the Shimazu clan, who ruled over southern Kyushu, and has a history of being the site of the Meiji Restoration, where Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi played active roles. The city is also blessed with magnificent nature, including Sakurajima, the sea, and forests. The Kagoshima City Museum of Art, located in this charming city, has a collection policy of "works by artists with ties to Kagoshima," "Western art from the late 19th century to the present," and "works inspired by the local climate (Sakurajima Collection)," and has a collection of approximately 4,350 pieces.

Kagoshima has produced many outstanding artists who represent the world of modern Japanese Western painting. This exhibition will bring together works by artists ranging from Kuroda Seiki, Fujishima Takeji, and Wada Eisaku to Togo Seiji and Ebihara Kinosuke to the present day. We will also introduce the diverse artistic work of Hashiguchi Goyo, who designed the cover for Natsume Soseki's "I Am a Cat" (first edition). In addition, the collection of Western art gems is not to be missed. This is a rare opportunity to view the history of modern Western art, starting with Raphaël Collin, who influenced Kuroda, through works by Monet, Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse, Dali, and others. Another highlight is Sakurajima, a symbol of the city that has fascinated and been painted by many artists.

Through this exhibition, please come and experience the culture that Kagoshima is proud of.
