"Stamped Mud" 1980

Calligraphy is a one-shot art that cannot be rewritten. The importance of breathing and rhythm when creating is also applicable to sports and music. For example, when drawing a line that is the "showpiece" of a large character work, you may hold your breath for a moment, then exhale and write in one go, just like the moment a batter catches the ball. In a work of cursive calligraphy with many characters, the rhythm of varying the speed of your brushstrokes and varying the amount of moisture in the lines is similar to that of singing or playing a musical instrument.

During his lifetime, Shinzan Kamijo often said, "There must be something about a work that makes you smile." His works are not just powerful, but also have a sense of generosity (grandeur, kindness...) and playfulness that comes from the quality of the lines, the color of the ink, the resonance of the white space, and other aspects of his calligraphy. I hope that you can feel the breath and personality of the artist through his calligraphy works.
