Ikegami Hyakuchiku-tei Collection
The Ikegami Hyakuchikutei Collection is a collection of 1890 items, mainly modern literary materials, collected by the literary man Ikegami Kisaku (pen name Hyakuchikutei, 1978-221). This time, we will be introducing works by haiku poets Kawahigashi Hekigoto and Ogiwara Seisensui.
Kawato Hekigoto (1873-1937) participated in Masaoka Shiki's haiku innovation movement, and continued the movement through his newspaper Nippon after Shiki's death. He was a haiku poet who advocated a new trend in haiku, promoting free-style haiku that was not bound by the typical five-seven-five format and aimed to break away from seasonal themes. One of the participants in Hekigoto's new-style haiku movement was Ogiwara Seisui (1884-1976). Although he later parted ways with Hekigoto, he remained a central free-style haiku writer. He had a close friendship with Ikegami Kisaku, and many of his works are included in his collection.
In addition to the works of these two poets, the exhibition will also feature the manuscript of Shiki's "Haiku Classification," a project he worked on throughout his life.
