Nordic Mystery —Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish paintings
Saturday, July 2024, 7 – Monday, September 13, 2024
Saturday, July 13, 2024 – Monday, September 23, 2024
Special Exhibition Gallery
This exhibition focuses on the mystical aspects of Nordic nature and mythology, and is the first to bring together in Japan a selection of 19th and early 20th century Nordic paintings from the collections of the national art galleries of Norway, Sweden and Finland.
In the 19th century, Scandinavian painters, who had previously taken their models from the art of continental countries such as France and Germany, gradually began to take a strong interest in the nature, history, and culture of their own countries against a backdrop of rising nationalism. Natural landscapes created by the harsh climate, ancient myths and folklore tales, and urban landscapes developing with modernization were fantastically expressed by painters, and a unique Scandinavian world of painting flourished. In particular, around 1900 was known as the Golden Age of Scandinavian art, and artists such as the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch were active in this period.
Enjoy the hidden charm of Nordic art through approximately 70 carefully selected, precious works.
