The Beginnings of Mountain Painting
To commemorate the birth of Mountain Day,
Matsumoto, the mountain city, will be holding a mountain art exhibition.
This exhibition introduces 46 selected works by 120 artists who painted majestic mountain landscapes and villages in the sky from the Meiji period to the early Showa period.
When mountains were still shrouded in a veil of mystery, people would look up at them from their foothills in awe and imagine fairyland. Modern mountaineering began in the 30s and early 20th century, when geographers, surveyors, and prospectors alike ventured into the unexplored parts of Japan's land. Vast gardens of the gods, dazzling waterfalls, and magnificent views of mountain after mountain. Thunder roars and pelting rain. The blazing glow of the sunset that follows. Dainty flowers at your feet... The discovery and surprise of fresh landscapes also meant the birth of a new way of seeing. Assimilating the spirit and breath of nature, painters discovered unknown colors and created new beauty.
As mountain climbing has become more commonplace, the styles of mountain paintings have become more diverse. However, the original experience of man facing the mountains for the first time still conveys the freshest emotions to us today.
