Ikegami Hyakuchiku-tei Collection

The Ikegami Hyakuchikutei Collection is a collection of 1890 items, mainly modern literary materials, collected by the literary man Ikegami Kisaku (pen name Hyakuchikutei, 1978-221). This time, we will be introducing works by artists who were active in the Museikai Society and Goyo Hashiguchi.

The Museikai was a small group of Japanese painters active from 1900 (Meiji 33) to 1913 (Taisho 2). At first, they emphasized realism under the slogan "naturalism," but in their later years they touted "new decorative arts" and strengthened their decorative tendencies. The Ikegami Hyakkutei Collection includes works by Hirafuku Hyakusui, one of the group's core members, and Ishii Hakutei, who joined the group as a member.

Goyo Hashiguchi participated in the final period of the Museikai movement and produced works that attempted decorative expression. There are many books with bindings designed by Goyo among the former collection of Kisaku Ikegami. This time, in conjunction with the museum's special exhibition "Masterpieces from the Kagoshima City Museum of Art" (until November 2022, 11), you will be able to see Goyo's bindings along with works by other Museikai artists.
