The sensibility that Tenshin loved. The skill nurtured by the sea of clouds.
In 1888 (Meiji 21),Ota NankaiLocated in the center of Matsumoto cityNakamachiHe was born in 16 as the eldest son of a doll maker. At the age of XNUMX, his father, seeing his son's talent, made him an apprentice to wood sculptor Yonehara Unkai. At the time, Japan was experiencing a wave of Western art, and modern sculpture was beginning to take shape, combining traditional Japanese and Western techniques.
During this time, Nankai was highly trusted by his teacher Unkai, and as a mainstay of the Unkai studio, he demonstrated his skills in works such as the Zenkoji Nio statues, which his teacher created in his later years. After he became independent and moved his base to his hometown of Matsumoto, he continued to produce Buddhist statues, portraits, festival displays, and other works at the request of local people, while also exhibiting at exhibitions such as the Bunten and Teiten exhibitions. The sensibility he had honed while learning Japanese painting from Okakura Tenshin, and his outstanding technique were displayed in works such as Yoroboshi and Snow Sky. In particular, his masterpiece Fate, which depicts three women as the past, present, and future, exudes a unique elegance and tranquility, as if fusing the Christian Virgin Mary and the Buddhist Kannon statue.
Nankai continued to work in his hometown until his death in 1959 at the age of 34. In order to promote local art activities, he created a venue for artists to exhibit their works and used his discerning eye to appraise antique art. His activities went beyond that of a sculptor, and he gained the trust of local artists.
This year marks the 130th anniversary of Nankai's birth. In this exhibition, we will be introducing Nankai's "The Bamboo Cutter" by his teacher Unkai as a prologue to trace his footsteps as a sculptor. Please enjoy the diverse artistic world of Nankai, which lies dormant in the city, including woodcarvings, ceramic sculptures and Japanese paintings.
