Matsumoto, a city of healthy life expectancy: Art exhibition by people aged 70 and over The older we are, the younger we feel

October2017-December3 Saturday, March 4, 2017 – Sunday, April 9, 2017
Special Exhibition Gallery

The open exhibition "The Older You Get, the Younger You Get," aimed at people aged 70 or over, is now in its seventh year. This time, there were 7 applications from 40 prefectures across Japan. From these, 440 works that were selected after a judging process will be exhibited.

The purpose of the first exhibition held in 2003 was to proclaim, "I sought in 'Okina' a world that is not gorgeous but beautiful, not huge but strong, not technical but beyond technical, another kind of art that cannot be reduced to painting methods or theories." Perhaps there is a world that can only be depicted by age, and I would like to see such a world. In response to this desire, 1 people submitted works in total over the seven exhibitions, totaling 7 pieces. Each time, Matsumoto City Museum of Art receives works filled with the artist's life so far, their passion now, and their hopes for the future.

Matsumoto City has set "Matsumoto, a city that extends healthy life expectancy" as its future vision, and is taking various steps to achieve this goal. In this exhibition, we hope you will be able to experience the power and brilliance of art, which has a major impact on extending healthy life expectancy. Please take your time to enjoy the free-spirited world of art (※) created by people over the age of 70.

*The term "Teni Muhou" refers to the fact that the heavenly maiden's clothes have no seams, and therefore the writing and paintings are natural and unpretentious. It also refers to a personality that is unadorned, pure, innocent, and carefree. In keeping with the purpose of this exhibition, the Grand Prize winner has been named the "Teni Award" and the runner-up the "Muhou Award."
