Parco, Family Mart, and Muji. The source of all the outbreaks was the Saison Group!

From the 1970s to the 80s, the Seibu Distribution Group (later the Saison Group), centered around Seibu Department Store, developed Seiyu Store and its private brand Muji, launched Parco, Family Mart, and Libro, which also handles publishing, and developed a new style of management. The Saison Group was led by Seiji Tsutsumi. Tsutsumi appointed excellent creators and developed an image strategy. One of these was the catchphrase "Delicious Life" (1982). In 1975, the Seibu Museum of Art (later the Sezon Museum of Art), which opened inside the Seibu Department Store, shocked visitors by showcasing contemporary art, which was still little known, as well as the art and culture of the Soviet Union and China, with whom Tsutsumi himself had contact. The Saison Group opened art museums and halls and actively introduced contemporary art, contemporary music, and performing arts. The "Saison Culture" that inspired everyday life. This exhibition follows the footsteps of the Saison Culture that created an era, centered on the collection of the Sezon Museum of Modern Art.

--And then there's Takashi Tsujii.

This exhibition will feature poems that Tsutsumi Seiji contributed to the Matsumoto City Museum of Art's exhibitions under the name of poet Tsujii Takashi, along with works from the Matsumoto City Museum of Art's collection. It will also feature essays that were serialized in the Shinano Mainichi Shimbun in 2006, along with illustrations by Tatsuno Toeko.

Foreword

Seiji Tsutsumi (1927-2013), the Man who revolutionized “Saison Culture”.
Seiji Tsutsumi was a businessman who managed the Saison Group, Japan's retail and distribution giant that included SEIBU department stores, PARCO shopping malls, SEIBU Museum of Art(Sezon Museum of Modern Art), SEIBU Theater, SEIYU supermarkets, MUJI, Family Mart convenience stores , LOFT and LIBRO. As president of the group during its golden age in the 1970s and 1980s, visionary Tsutsumi did not just grow material wealth by selling goods, he also tried several image strategies to develop a sense of Japanese style and to bring a thrill to everyday life. He gathered creators who pushed forward the cutting edge of advertising copy, graphic design and spatial design. was also instrumental in introducing modern art both from Japan and the rest of the world to the SEIBU Museum of Art, leading a generation under the banner of Saison culture.
In this exhibition we can catch a glimpse of the activities of Tsutsumi's associates through works from the collection of the Saison Museum of Modern Art in Karuizawa.
Another face of Tsutsumi was as a poet and writer under the pen name Takashi Tsujii, and we also show poems collected by the Matsumoto City Museum of Art, and essays serialized in the Shinano Mainichi Newspaper.
We would like to thank the Saison Museum of Modern Art for their generous support, those who have allowed us to exhibit their valuable works, and everyone else who has made this exhibition possible.
