The artist who died young, Yasuka Sudo
The painter Sudo Yasuka (30-1978) passed away at the young age of 2009 after a long battle with illness.
His beloved mother passed away during his adolescence, and he himself was forced into a long battle with illness. In the midst of the struggle between life and death, he continued to pursue the world of "light" through painting and poetry, and continued to confront the unfathomable "darkness" in his own heart.
Yasuka Sudo was born in Fukushima Prefecture in 1978, and moved to Yokosuka, Sapporo, Numazu, Tokyo, and Omi Village, Nagano Prefecture, due to her father's work. During her childhood in Kanagawa, she developed nephrotic syndrome and was repeatedly hospitalized, but she developed an obsession with drawing.
While anticipating her impending death, she painted portraits, self-portraits, imaginary landscapes and natural scenery, all of which are filled with joy and suffering, hope and despair, life and death. She left behind over 1,000 works in her all-too-short life. To prevent these works from being scattered, her father established the Koka Art Museum in Matsumoto City in 2012, and continues to carefully preserve her works. With the full cooperation of the Koka Art Museum, this exhibition is the first large-scale retrospective to approach the unknown Koka Sudo in her entirety.
