Yayoi Kusama: The place for my soul
Year-round exhibition
Collection Exhibition Rooms A, B, and C
We will introduce the trajectory of Yayoi Kusama's creative activities and soul, from her early works to her latest series, "My Eternal Soul." Experience Yayoi Kusama's present and origins in her hometown of Matsumoto.
Yayoi Kusama is a unique artist who left her hometown and took off into the world more than half a century ago. In recent years, her work has become even more brilliant. What is it that keeps attracting so many people? Yayoi Kusama's messages of "eternity," "infinity," "love," "life," "death," and "universe" run through her many works. Perhaps it is because her underlying voice, and sometimes her screams, deeply intertwine with the hearts of viewers and never let go.
Kusama was born in Matsumoto in 1929. As a child she struggled daily with hallucinations, and her drawings of those images on scraps of paper were perhaps the starting point of her art. After solo exhibitions in Matsumoto and Tokyo, she moved to the U.S. in 1957, living and working in New York for 16 years. Her inner feelings found expression in polka dots and net paintings. As well as paintings, she worked on sculptures, performance art, video and installations, continuing her prolific output after her move to Tokyo in 1973. Kusama has always easily surpassed the reputation that her own works had built up with her new works. However, this is also a creative activity that cannot be allowed to stop. And even now, she continues to be "avant-garde" without slowing down her pace.
