Tamura Kazuo Memorial Gallery

Tamura Kazuo (1904-1997) was a painter who was familiar with the mountains of Shinshu and loved the Japanese land. He was captivated by the magnificent scenery of the Tateshina Plateau, which he visited when he was in his 20s, and he made Japanese highland landscapes his subject matter throughout his life. In particular, Tamura visited Shinshu almost every year, and left behind many works that took Shinshu landscapes as their subject. These highland landscapes subtly exude the harshness of nature and the warmth of the earth that Tamura himself felt firsthand.

Among the four seasons in Japan, Tamura especially loved the lonely and dark climate of winter. Please enjoy the charm of Tamura's landscape paintings, which are different from realistic paintings, as he continued to sketch highland scenery outdoors even during the coldest months of the year.
