今をさかのぼることおよそ100年前のことです。日本最初の小学校の一つである松本・開智学校では、校内の一角で教育品や美術作品をあつめて展示し、一般に公開するという催しがありました。大正の中頃になると、美術作品を収集・公開することの意義をはっきりと唱え、専門の施設の設置を要望する声が上がってきます。地方の一小都市において、社会文化教育を重要視する、当時の国内の様子からしても先見的で志の高い要望だったと思われます。

平成29年に、松本市美術館は設立開館から15周年を迎えます。私たちは100年前のルーツを大事にしながら、少しずつ作品の収蔵をつづけてきました。

今回の展示では、当館のコレクションの成り立ちと現在を、いくつかのテーマから概観したいと思います。登場する作品の個々の魅力をじっくり味わっていただきつつ、「ミュージアムピース」として大切に収蔵されてきた由縁に思い及んでいただけたら幸いです。

It is now almost a hundred years since a small collection of education materials and artworks were displayed in Kaichi school, which was one of the first elementary schools in Japan. In the middle of the Taisho era, there was a strong voice advocating the collection and exhibition of art works, and a demand for establishments specialising in this. Attaching importance to cultural education now seems a bold and forward-looking step for a small provincial town.

Matsumoto City Museum of Art is approaching its fifteenth year, and to honour these roots from a hundred years ago, we are steadily acquiring works.

In this exhibition we would like to explore the origins and current state of our collection from different perspectives. We hope you will enjoy these various works, and appreciate why they became museum pieces.
