信州にゆかりの深い彫刻家・画家である石井鶴三（つるぞう）の特集展示を開催します。

石井鶴三は、画家・石井鼎湖（ていこ）の三男として東京に生まれました。祖父は画家・鈴木鵞湖（がこ）、長兄は画家・石井柏亭（はくてい）という芸術の血筋にあって、鶴三もまた彫刻家を目指します。その生涯は、彫刻家・画家として立体の美をつきつめる美術家修行の人生でした。

日本近代彫刻の代表的作家としてだけでなく、油彩画、水彩画のほかにも版画、そして挿絵など様々な分野で活躍しました。

制作の対象は、信州の山々や自然、人物像、仏像、相撲力士の肉塊の躍動、歌舞伎・能・狂言など、多岐にわたります。これらは鶴三が心動かされた、大好きなものたちです。「芸術は感動です」これは鶴三の言葉です。何かを見て、何かを感じ、その感動をかたちにして表現しています。

信州との関わりは、山から始まります。1906（明治39）年、20歳の時に浅間山に登り、山頂からみた雲海や山並みに強く心を打たれ、毎年のように山に登るようになりました。また、1924（大正13）年に信州上田の彫塑講習会の講師を依頼されると50年近く務め、信州の美術教育に多大な影響を与えました。木曽に滞在し、彫刻による《木曽馬》の制作もしています。

そして2009（平成21）年、2万点を超える石井鶴三の作品資料が当館へ寄贈されました。今回の展観では、その中から当館未公開作品を多数含めた選りすぐりの作品をご紹介します。知れば知るほど魅力が増していく、そんな作家です。是非この機会にゆっくりとご鑑賞いただき、「感動」していただけると幸いに存じます。

Welcome to this special exhibition of Tsuruzo Ishii, a sculptor and painter with a deep connection to Shinshu.

Tsuruzo was born in Tokyo, the third son of painter Teiko Ishii, grandson of Gako Suzuki and younger brother of Hakutei Ishii. Coming from an artistic family, he turned his hand to sculpture. He devoted his artistic life to exploring three-dimensional beauty.

Not only did he represent modern Japanese sculpture, he was also active in many fields, painting in oil and water colours, as well as producing wood blocks and illustrations.

The subjects of his works included the mountains and nature of Shinshu, statues, buddhist images, sumo wrestlers, kabuki, noh and kyogen. He said “Art is passion”, and he gave form to the emotions that came from what he saw and what he felt.

In Shinshu, he began with the mountains. In 1906, at the age of 20, he climbed Mount Asama, and the view from the top across the sea of clouds and mountain peaks struck him deeply, so from then, he visited Shinshu every year to climb. In 1924, he was commissioned to teach sculpture in Ueda, where he worked for fifty years, having a profound influence on art education in Shinshu. He also spent time in Kiso, where he made carvings of Kiso Horses.

In 2009, over 20,000 of his works were donated to this museum. In this exhibition we draw on that collection, including several works that have never been displayed before. The more of his works you see, the more appeal they have. We hope you enjoy this exhibition, and feel his passion.
